The FLIP Side is an experience that allows an ever-apparent, fresh breed of theatre the opportunity to foster in a community otherwise unaware of its presence. This series provides a voice for challenging, life-affirming & thought-provoking material that the Miami Valley area has yet to hear. In an attempt to continue the tradition of FutureFest, the FLIP Side creates a passage for new works, both plays and musicals, to continue on their artistic path. In addition, The FLIP Side is proud to be the only theatrical series locally to present theatre admission-free. As the FLIP Side continues to change the way the Miami Valley experiences live theatre, a number of new innovations are being developed. As always, keep your eyes peeled to www.daytonplayhouse.org for the latest developments.

Kicking off this series will be the Regional Premier of SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE WEST END HORROR. A despicable theatre critic has been murdered, and Holmes and Watson are soon visited by George Bernard Shaw, an aspiring Irish playwright who entices Holmes to take the case. As they cross swords with the most famous literary luminaries of the day -- Oscar Wilde, Gilbert & Sullivan, Henry Irving, Bram Stoker, and a young H.G. Wells, Holmes and Watson come face to face with their own celebrity as they pursue the killer in this rollickingly funny whodunit.

Next on the roster will be the area premier of Jeff Goode’s THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES. The Eight is a story about Santa’s beloved reindeer and their issues with sexual harassment, alcoholism, homosexuality and the working conditions at Santa’s toyshop. When one member of the sleigh team speaks out, the media wants answers to what happened that night in the toyshop. The dark comedy, set in the North Pole, takes you through each of the famous reindeer’s thoughts on the outrageous claims against Mr. Claus. With all of this going on, will the spirit of Christmas survive? SPECIAL NOTE: No one under the age of 17 will be admitted without proper parental consent.

Kicking off 2008 (which just happens to be an election year…) will be the return of the ORIGINAL “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical”, HAIR. See the show that brought the revolution to Broadway. HAIR, The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical comes again to set the stage on fire as it did in the late 1960’s. Experience how rock and roll music, modern dance and a contemporary message first brought a new voice to the houses of the American musical theatre and the love revolution. Bridging generations and viewpoints, HAIR has a volatile impact. That which seems to be pandemonium evolves into organized chaos. With phenomenal musical numbers like Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, I Believe in Love, I Got Life, What a Piece of Work Is Man and Hippie Life, HAIR represents the voice of a generation and the ideals that will continue to shape our nation for decades to come. This show has vitality, timelessness and meaning that embody not only the dreams of a past generation but truly the dawning of a new age.

Then in April, Dayton Playhouse will present a rare theatrical event. Over the span of three nights, we will present the entire 3-play OEDIPUS CYCLE, (Oedipus Rex on Thursday, Oedipus at Colonus on Friday, & Antigone on Saturday.) The Oedipus Cycle, written by Greek dramatist Sophocles in the 5th century BC, follows the tragic downfall of the mythical king Oedipus of Thebes and his descendants. The plays were written across forty years of Sophocles' career and were not composed in chronological order as Antigone was written first. As a result, there are some inconsistencies but, because the plays were not produced at the same time, these inconsistencies were not important. The FLIP Side is ready for the challenge these inconsistencies may bring as we will, over the span of three days, present The Oedipus Cycle in its entirety. This will be a unique theatrical event not to be missed!

Concluding the 07-08 FLIP Side Series will be the regional premier of Christopher Durang’s newest play, MISS WITHERSPOON. Miss Witherspoon refuses to reincarnate! Life stinks, and nothing that God, Gandalf or Rex Harrison can say will convince her to return to earth! Forced by her spirit guide to face the consequences of her past lives, Miss Witherspoon must embrace her spiritual lessons, and learn to use her stubbornness for the good of mankind. Don't miss the Regional premier of this brand new, quirky, and insightful metaphysical comedy by Christopher Durang. If you enjoyed Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge, then Miss Witherspoon is not to be missed!

Performances are held at the Dayton Playhouse, located at 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave. , adjacent to the Wegerzyn Metrogardens. Admission to all shows on the FLIP Side series are free, however we do accept donations at the door. Reservations are not accepted as seating is first come, first serve and limited. Doors open at 7:30pm. For more information, visit us on the web at www.daytonplayhouse.org or call Amy Brown at (937)424-0057.
